Featured Script of the Month for October/November – DEAD MAN’S HAND by Ronald L. Ecker
We chose Ronald’s script from a host of October and November submissions for its intriguing concept – which is what this free contest is all about! We combined the Script of the Month to include both October and November entries because of the off-period between our Summer Contest and current Winter 2018 Contest (enter here!) to give everyone the best opportunity possible.
For winning the Featured Script of the Month, Ronald now receives free Judging Feedback and publicity on our website, Twitter feed, and Facebook page. Ronald will also get the chance for a free resubmission of his script to our current main screenwriting contest! A great set of prizes for a free writing contest!
Here’s Ronald’s summary of this interesting script…
When the hypnotist dies during a past life regression, it leaves a present-day schoolteacher and an Old West gunfighter trapped in each other’s body and times.
Check out a short biography on Ronald, too!
Born and raised in Florida, Ronald L. Ecker received a B.A. in English at the University of Florida, and spent two years as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Arequipa, Peru. He earned a Master of Library Science degree at Florida State University, and worked as a librarian at Barry University in Miami and with the state of Florida until his retirement in 2000.
He is the author of five published books, including the Dictionary of Science and Creationism, selected by the review journal Choice as one of the Outstanding Academic Books of 1990. His complete modern-English translation of The Canterbury Tales (with Chaucer scholar Eugene J. Crook) was a widely adopted text in college and university literature courses, and is now available free in an online edition.
He also writes screenplays and songs. His scripts have been in the Winners category in four screenplay contests (e.g., 2nd Place Winner in the 2014/15 Comedy Screenplay Contest, and a Winner in the 2016 True Story Screenplay Competition) and finalists in 14 others.

A new winner is revealed for our free writing contest, the Featured Script of the Month Contest…
Our August winner of the Featured Script of the Month is DEAD POSSUM by Jared Wayne Raun.
We chose Jared’s script from a host of August submissions for its unique and interesting concept – which is what this free contest is all about!
Hell, we’ll show you what we’re talking about. Here’s a quick summary on the script by Jared:
“A boy discovers he is dead, but resists leaving his body so he can save his living girlfriend from a gang of zombie bikers, despite protestations from his spirit guide.”
And here’s a short bio on Jared:
Jared is a longtime lover of movies, comics, music, and episodic storytelling. He graduated from USC film school in the late nineties and spent the first decade of his career working in production. Around ten years ago he switched his focus to writing and though he has written over ten feature scripts and a web series, this summer marks the first attempt he has made to get his work out to the public through screenwriting contests. He is honored to receive this award and hopes to see Dead Possum on screen sometime in the near future.
In addition to many more feature scripts queued up to write, Jared has several animated and live action projects he hopes to direct, the first being a horror/fantasy web series pilot set to shoot in early 2018.
For winning the August Featured Script of the Month Jared now receives free Judging Feedback and publicity on our website, Twitter feed, and Facebook page. Jared will also get the chance for a free resubmission of his script to our current main screenwriting contest! A great set of prizes for a free writing contest!
Let’s also give a hand to our Honorable Mentions:
EMILY’S STARS by Bill Baber.
WEST DAKOTA by Mark J. Rose,
And TOUGH THE FIRE by Kevin Karp.

With two cycles of our main competition clashing almost directly with the deadline dates of our Monthly Contest, we’ve decided to delay relaunching our Monthly Contest again until at least January 2017. Anyone who has submitted to our Monthly contest since the start of August will be offered a free entry to the main contest (representing a significant discount on its current entry price), which currently closes at the same time as the September competition would have done anyway!
In place of the Monthly Contest, we’d like to introduce our new FEATURED SCRIPT OF THE MONTH. This prize – for which all submissions to our contests are automatically entered for free – is awarded to the most interesting script we process during that month. The winner receives free Judging Feedback worth $99 plus a free resubmission for their redrafted script to whichever contest it has entered! On top of that, we will give the writer and script the kind of publicity that our previous Monthly Contest winners have received. Not a bad bonus to be offering all of our entrants for free! Right?
Congratulations once again to everyone who has won, or otherwise benefited, from the Monthly contest so far: we’ve been delighted with the standard of the best entries. We hope you’ll agree that the enhanced competition cycles and writer development of the FEATURED SCRIPT OF THE MONTH will be a great – and free – substitute for the opportunity you’ve benefited from so far.
We look forward to announcing our first winning FEATURED SCRIPT OF THE MONTH for August and September submissions early in October. Watch this space!

MALE DELIVERY, Paul Penley
Thank you to everyone who entered this time! There was a great variety in the scripts for this contest, and we hope this trend can continue into our future competitions.
Here is a little background on Matthew:
Matthew Heinze has been writing movies since he was a kid growing up in Chicago. He learned the actual screenwriting art form and format at Columbia College where he majored in Fiction Writing. After graduating, he and several close friends started a small indie film company where he was a writer and director. During their 7 years of collaboration, they pumped out short and feature-length comedies which showed in many film festivals.
For the past 8 years Matthew has been working in the field of Instructional Design, developing and writing online training scripts and interactive course material for a wide variety of clients.
Matthew moved to Austin, Texas in 2012 and has since been focused on taking his screenwriting to the next level.
Here is a brief synopsis of the winning script:
Belle Sweatburg leaves her inactive comfort zone to chase the man of her dreams into the culture of long distance running, hurdling career and family obstacles along the way.
