Announcement: Our 2024 Screenwriting Contest Extended Deadline is November 24th!
If you missed the Standard Deadline, you have TWO EXTRA WEEKS to finish your scripts and submit them to us by November 24th for the opportunity to win some amazing prizes!
Thank you to everyone who has entered our 2024 Screenwriting Contests so far. The volume of entries has made it tricky for us to get our analyses of the script’s first ten pages to all our entrants before the standard deadline, the extension will leave enough time for everyone who’s entered (any of our screenwriting contests) to respond to the feedback and submit an improved redraft before the contest closes. Make sure to keep an eye on your inboxes!
The top 3 scripts will receive the following:
- A year of script development and mentoring worth $3200. We will work with you to develop your project to ensure it has the best possible chance of success.
- Representation from our industry-facing partner organisation TalentScout International Management, which has been taking winning screenwriters to the top since 1999.
- Guaranteed pitching of your developed script to the international entertainment industry.
We’re serious about selling our winners’ scripts. Don’t regret it later by missing out! Our results – with up to 50+ Quarter-Finalists, 25+ Semi-Finalists, 3 Winners and 4 Special Prize Winners – show you where your project currently sits in comparison to others. We will show you its potential through our studio-quality tiers of script mentoring and script consultancy, whilst also advising how to remove the obstacle to success, without compromising the things that matter most to you about your script!

There is just over a week until the WriteMovies Sci-Fi and Fantasy Award 2024 deadline. The contest is a call to screenwriters who are prepared to create entire worlds from scratch, so here are some Sci-Fi and Fantasy Worldbuilding tips!
For Sci-fi and Fantasy, worldbuilding is the foundation of a compelling story. From distant futures with advanced technology to magical lands that go beyond the natural realm, it’s important to develop your skills to bring your unique vision to life!
Tip 1 – More than just a setting:
Worldbuilding is more than just designing a futuristic city or a fantastical landscape, it’s about constructing a world with a deep history and atmosphere. Great worldbuilding transports the viewer into a fully realised universe, with its own rules, laws and culture. Think of James Cameron’s Avatar where the characters embody a deep spiritual connection to their alien ecosystems, and speak with their own language which adds layers of authenticity and depth to the story.
Tip 2 – Keep it consistent:
Your story world is likely to operate under entirely different rules from our own, so keep them consistent! When a world possesses unique physics, societal systems and cultural norms, the audience is invited to suspend their disbelief and invest in the story. Think of the Star Wars franchise with the Jedi and their use of a mystical Force. Filmmakers entering that world must consider everything, from how the different societies interact, to the architecture and natural resources of the character’s environment.
Tip 3 – Your characters are part of the world
Effective worldbuilding requires well-developed characters. The way they dress, speak and act should be influenced by the world they live in. Take the resourceful survivors in Mad Max: Fury Road who embody the harsh dystopian desert through their culture of driving diesel-guzzling motor vehicles under the rule of a tyrannical overlord who controls the water.
Tip 4 – Your world has history:
The best sci-fi and fantasy worlds feel like they have existed long before the story begins. Give your world depth and dimension by incorporating a rich history into your screenplay. You could even include various mythology or hint at ancient conflicts. For example, The Lord of the Rings features a layered backstory of different races and their past wars.
If you have a sci-fi or fantasy university waiting to be explored, then the WriteMovies Sci-Fi and Fantasy Award 2024 is the ideal way to share it with the world. This is because the winner will receive guaranteed representation from TalentScout International Management and pitching to the international entertainment industry. To ensure your script is the best it possibly can be, the winner will also receive a year of script mentoring worth $3200. The deadline is approaching in just over a week, so enter today!

As the industry slowly gets back to normal, the demand for spec scripts and the potential opportunities for screenwriters in 2021 could be huge. The pandemic has changed the world and the movie industry along with it.
Back in the ‘90s, the spec script had a golden age. As reported by gointothestory.com, there were 173 spec scripts sold in 1995, a staggering number compared to modern-day figures. We think there’s potential for these numbers to increase again because of the pandemic and the way film distribution has worked during this unstable time.
Streaming services are vital in the present day and are the most popular way that people consume films and TV shows, with services like Netflix producing their own films and releasing them exclusively on their own platforms. At the same time, major production companies were unable to put their films into cinemas during the pandemic.
As a result, these companies started releasing their movies on VoD and streaming services instead, sometimes for a higher fee. What does this mean for screenwriters? Well, with people able to easily consume new films at home without even needing to get up off the couch, there will be a constant demand for new films and scripts.
This, in turn, means that a film’s opening weekend and box-office numbers won’t be the only thing producers look at, and they’re far more likely to take risks on spec scripts because of the constant demand from streaming and VoD.
Here at WriteMovies, we make sure all our winners are in the best position possible when pitching to the industry. Click here to enter before the deadline and have a chance of winning our 2021 Spring Contest!
