MGM Has a Hankering for Hobbit

Harry Sloan says the studio is in talks with the Lord of the Rings director to make two more films set in Middle Earth.

MGM chief Harry Sloan addressed European media execs in London this week, filling them in on the studio’s future plans, and Bilbo Baggins features prominently in them.

MGM is in talks with Peter Jackson and New Line Cinema with an eye toward creating a film version of J.R.R. Tolkien’s novel The Hobbit, the prequel to The Lord of the Rings, in which Bilbo Baggins acquires the Ring of Power while on an unexpected quest. Sloan says the studio wants to make a second Hobbit feature that would follow the events of the first, but come before the events of New Line’s trilogy. MGM holds the rights to The Hobbit, but New Line Cinema is currently the holder of The Lord of the Rings, and those negotiations are crucial to the future of the project. Sloan says the studio will be putting most of its energies into that project.

In other tentpole franchise news, a new Pink Panther film is expected to begin shooting in February with Steve Martin returning as Inspector Clouseau. Pierce Brosnan will begin shooting a sequel to The Thomas Crown Affair in March, and Rocky Balboa is set for release next year, which Sloan says will probably be the final installment in that franchise.
