In the SCI-FI AND FANTASY CONTEST, this is definitely the strongest set of scripts we’ve judged for the SCI-FI AND FANTASY AWARD in recent years. We noticed many patterns across the entries to this contest this year. Several of these scripts had strong visions, excellent plot twists and blockbuster potential. Many writers showed how environmental degradation and technology are likely to transform our freedoms and way of life. That’s not surprising, considering what’s in the news every day – but when we’re hearing bad news about something every day in our real lives, it can sap audience motivation to go deeper into the same problems through a fictional story. Meanwhile, dialogue style plays an important part in reaching out beyond the traditional genre audiences here – we need warmth not just significance in dialogue. So for us the best stories were the ones that explored future or other-worldly challenges and dilemmas through natural human emotions and characters that could get under our skin and bring other-worldly scenarios to life.

The volume of entries has made it tricky for us to get our analyses of the script’s first ten pages to all our entrants before the standard deadline, the extension will leave enough time for everyone who’s entered (any of our screenwriting contests) to respond to the feedback and submit an improved redraft before the contest closes.
