Spring 2016 International Screenwriting Contest – Semi-Finalists (Les demi-finalistes de notre Concours Printemps 2016 / Halbfinalisten Frühling 2016)

Spring 2016 Competition

We are delighted to be able to announce the semi-finalists for our Spring 2016 competition! It was a tough task whittling down the semi-finalists from the 52 quarter-finalists, but those who did get through have thoroughly deserved it. All of the scripts featured here go through to our final round for consideration – we’re aiming to reveal the overall winners on August 5th.

If you’ve not made it this time, don’t take this as negative – use it to come back stronger and with something to prove. Don’t forget our Summer Consultancy offers to take your writing and script to the next level. We are offering summer discounts for our Judging Feedback (just $69 – normally $99), and Studio Consulting ($99- normally $129) and Development Notes ($149 – a huge $50 discount from the normal $199!) and we are freezing the price of our Elite Consultancies at $299 – a unique price to get up to an hour of consultancy from a top studio executive!

If you haven’t already, check out our Director of World Wide Development’s special article about What Your Scripts Have Been Telling Us over this period (CLICK HERE to read it and consider how the trends he’s noticed might relate to your script). We’re also compiling other Writing Tips from our reports to publish on the site soon, with general tips for helping your script sing. Don’t forget that many of our writers got their careers going by using our consulting service: CLICK HERE

UK Contest Winner – MADAME CAVELL by Phillip Ramati

UK Contest Winner – MADAME CAVELL by Phillip Ramati

UK Writers Support

Last week, we confirmed Phillip Ramati as our winner for the  UK Screenwriting contest for his script MADAME CAVELL. Phillip was one of the first people to enter this contest and for winning he receives a cash prize of £500, a year of free script development and mentoring worth over $3,200, and potential representation within the British industry to studios, producers, and commissioners.

Spotlight on Phillip Ramati… Phillip Ramati.2

Here’s some background information on Phillip:

“I have dual US/UK citizenship. I was an award-winning journalist for 21 years and now work for in public relations for a university. I am a former Disney/ABC Writing Fellowship finalist, made it to the Austin Film Festival second round with three different scripts, and finished in the Top 10% of Nicholl Fellowship scripts the last two years.”

Based on a true Story…

Phillip’s winning script, MADAME CAVELL, is based on true events that happened during World War I, and with our announcement of the results coming on the hundredth anniversary of the Battle of the Somme, this seems like a somewhat fitting winner.

Here’s more about the script in Philip’s own words.

“Based on a true story, British nurse Edith Cavell helped save hundreds of lives during World War I by smuggling English, French and Belgian soldiers out of Belgium to avoid capture. She was arrested, put on trial and executed, causing worldwide outrage.”

A huge thank you to everyone who entered to the competition! We received a lot of entries considering the recent inception of the contest, and the quality of the scripts was very high. Praise must also go out to our runners-up and semi-finalists – the full list of which, can be found here: https://writemovies.com/uk-screenwriting-competition-results/

Once again, congratulations to Phillip for his well-written and intriguing script.

By Ian Kennedy, WriteMovies Director of World Wide Development:

“You should never treat ‘non-selection’ as being ‘rejection’, only as a kind of feedback about how your script currently compares and competes against its rivals (on balance of risk, for producers)…” Ian’s tips and feedback on six months of scripts submitted to WriteMovies.
