At WriteMovies, we don’t just award writers who come through our contests – we celebrate them, developing their winning scripts to prepare them for pitching to the industry.
Today, we would like to introduce Michael Cotter, a winner of our Spring 2026 Screenwriting Contest. As his project progresses with development from the WriteMovies team, we’re excited to share his biography.
Michael Cotter is an Irish-born screenwriter based in Bulgaria, where he has lived since 2022.
Michael writes character-driven stories that blend heart and humour, with a particular focus on commercially accessible film and television – building a diverse slate of original feature films, television series, and animated projects. His work frequently explores themes of family, belief, identity, and human connection across a range of genres, including drama, comedy, animation, and adventure.
His screenplays have received international recognition, earning nine selections and awards in screenplay competitions across the United States and Europe.
Michael’s recent successes come in the form of contributing writer on The Renaissance of Oddity Todd (2026) and the active development an original television pilot in collaboration with a Canadian production company.

His project is currently receiving script development from the WriteMovies team to prepare it for pitching to industry. This is a key part of what we aim to offer – not just recognition, but a pathway for scripts to move forward.
