2024 marks the first year we are running our Script Pitch Contest, so let’s take a look at the important elements of a screenplay pitch!
Before examining the important elements of a screenplay pitch, it’s important to understand why pitching matters. Pitching is the art of convincing other people that they’ll love your script and should back it with their own money, resources, and credibility.
A script will never be seen by the audience it deserves if you cannot pitch it to someone with the power to produce it and distribute it to a wide audience. You also need a strong pitch in order to convince audiences to watch it – what will convince them to watch it out of all the things they could be doing or watching instead?
First and foremost would be your script’s logline. A logline is a very brief summary of your project, in a sentence or 25 words. Source inspiration for your logline from places including the back of DVDs and Blu-Rays, the listings on streaming services and online pitching platforms like Inktip and Script Pipeline.
Next, you want to develop a ‘movie poster’ for your script. Not a literal poster, but a document that has the same effect – a One-Page Pitch. It doesn’t just rehash your synopsis/treatment, a One-Page Pitch should SELL your story – not TELL your story! Tell us what’s in your story – not what happens. Use images (ideally royalty-free), to help it stand out, at WriteMovies we’ve developed a typical format for pitching our winners. New for 2024 we’ve launched our Script Pitch Contest. If you’ve got an idea you’re dying to develop, then pitch it to us. The most impressive entry wins a year of script development and guaranteed representation and pitching to the international industry.
Your One-Page Pitch (max 500s words) should include the following: author name, logline, and information about the project.
