Making A Movie MonsterHappy Halloween from us at WriteMovies! As our Horror Award 2024 deadline draws near, we’re marking this spooky season by discussing Making a Movie Monster!

Making a movie monster is important for the horror genre – it thrives on memorable villains that haunt audiences long after the credits finish rolling. From physical creatures stalking your characters from the shadows to metaphorical monsters that represent our deepest fears, if you’ve got a terrifying idea for a monster, then bring it to life with the WriteMovies Horror Award 2024!

From supernatural beings to otherworldly aliens to forces of nature, monsters are at the heart of some of the most iconic horror films. They’re more than just sources of fear—they can embody the unknown, pushing the protagonist, and by extension, the viewers, to face what terrifies them more than anything!

A good movie monster can become a cultural icon, with classic examples including the disturbing sexual overtones of Alien‘s xenomorph, or the embodiment of classic fears with It‘s Pennywise. They also have the power to represent our inner anxieties, providing a face to the fears we can’t always see with just our eyes. Recent examples include The Babadook with the monster being a metaphor for grief and depression, whilst The Invisible Man symbolizes domestic abuse.

When designing a standout monster, first decide whether your creature should be physical or psychological. A physical monster should be distinct, with carefully designed features that evoke terror. For a psychological monster, you must consider how its presence impacts your character’s emotional state, heightening their story through metaphor. Consider what fears or anxieties it could represent, for example, it could represent loss, isolation or even technology.

Entering the Horror Award 2024 provides the opportunity to explore these themes creatively, giving your monster a purpose beyond just scaring the audience. If you have a monster that’s physical, psychological, or even something in between, it’s your opportunity to bring it to life in an unforgettable way.

This is because the winner will receive a year of script development and mentoring worth $3200, so ensure your monster and story have the strongest potential for success. Then we provide representation through Talent Scout International Management and guarantee to pitch your winning script to the top of the industry!
