It’s been a thrilling few months for us, reading all your submissions to the WriteMovies 2022 Writing Contest, but it’s finally come to a close. We’ve chosen our winners!
You scared the living daylights out of us in the Horror Award, melted our hearts in the Romance and Comedy Award, and transported us to brave new worlds in our Sci-Fi and Fantasy Award.
The winners of those prizes have already been announced, but today we reveal who takes home the Grand Prize of $3500 for the best script. Our top five have also won great prizes, including script development, pitching to industry, and more!
With the number and variety of submissions, the competition has been tough. If you didn’t make it this time, don’t feel too bad; here are a few things we learned from your scripts that you can work on for the future:
- Audience appeal remains one of the most overlooked elements – and yet is the most important thing of all! Remember, your script is never going to get made if no-one is going to watch it. Make sure you know your target audience!
- Use your first ten pages as effectively as you can. A number of scripts set up a different story in their opening pages than we got for the rest of the script; this is a vital part of your script, where you need to establish our expectations and make a good first impression.
- Conflict is important for holding our interest – don’t shy away from it! Conflict is drama, and without it we won’t be kept engaged. Don’t be afraid to put your protagonists through hell – we’ll love them all the more for it…
