With the number and variety of submissions, the competition was tough. If you didn’t make it in 2023, don’t feel too bad; here are a few things we learned from your scripts that you can work on for the future:
- Audience appeal remains one of the most overlooked elements – and yet is the most important thing of all! Remember, your script is never going to get made if no-one is going to watch it. Make sure you know your target audience!
- Use your first ten pages as effectively as you can. A number of scripts set up a different story in their opening pages than we got for the rest of the script; this is a vital part of your script, where you need to establish our expectations and make a good first impression.
- Conflict is important for holding our interest – don’t shy away from it! Conflict is drama, and without it we won’t be kept engaged. Don’t be afraid to put your protagonists through hell – we’ll love them all the more for it…
