WriteMovies.com International Writing Competition #22
We received 1000 screenplays, books, plays, short stories and articles from the following countries: USA, Canada, United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, Germany, France, Belgium, Switzerland, Russia, Italy, Greece, Nigeria, Georgia, Mexico, Japan, South Africa and Taiwan.
The overall standard was very high, hence the large number of writers we found to be eligible for the final rounds.
We decided against many competent works for a variety of reasons. Some were not suited for the cinematic medium. Others were conceptually flawed, in that they either delivered last year’s movie or an idea that was just not feasible. There is nothing sadder than a brilliantly executed “bad idea”, (well, unless it’s a badly executed good idea). But in all honesty, the shelves of most Hollywood pros are lined with these. We hope that those who did not make will stay in touch with us. We have enjoyed our myriad of email exchanges and are working hard at making this site more relevant to your careers. Don’t forget that many of our writers got their careers going by using our consulting service-Click here
Résultats De Concours No: 22
Cordialement,
JACQUES HUBERT (FIRST PLACE):
After a career in the French Foreign Office, Jacques has finally been able to devote time to his first love, screenwriting. Based on his diverse experiences around the world he wrote the first draft of PARACELSUS in 2008 and is delighted to have won the WriteMovies.com International Contest with what turned out to be his 11th draft. Who says hard work does not pay off? The story revolves around a devastating famine in China forcing millions of Chinese to walk into Russia, with devastating geopolitical consequences. The folks at WriteMovies have already pitched the script to several agencies, production companies and studios and I have had 34 reading requests.
MICHAEL WARNER (SECOND PLACE):
A graduate of the University of Michigan and an award winning screenwriter, Michael J. Warner has expanded into becoming an overall filmmaker with his first 16-minute HD short called “Shocked Jock” which has been an official selection of eight film festivals so far. www.shockedjock.com
Michael began his career as a staff accountant in the consolidation department at Paramount Communications. After working as a p.a. on “Sex and the City” for one season, Michael landed at Air Sea Land Productions, Inc.
Michael’s sci-fi fantasy screenplay, “Born Again,” which has been a finalist in a few screenwriting competitions just took 2nd place in the 2009 Writemovies.com writing contest. Overall, Michael has written 12 feature-film screenplays, 4 original TV dramas, 3 original sitcoms and 3 short films.
COURTNEY LICHTERMAN (THIRD PLACE):
Like the main character in her pilot, The Counter, Courtney Lichterman has worked at both a New York City cosmetics counter (where it was not uncommon for rats to hide in drawers) as well as a Los Angeles cosmetics counter. She has a bachelor’s degree in theater, a blog about shopping bags (bagatellemuseum.blogspot.com), and a television that gets a whole new set of channels every time it’s been unplugged for a while. An avid traveler and sometimes travel writer, she is now the PR manager for a travel website and writes regular columns for both Reuters news service and United Press International (UPI) on behalf of the site. Before this contest, the only thing she had ever won was a brass lamp so heavy she almost couldn’t carry it home.
