WriteMovies.com International Writing Competition #21

We received 1000 screenplays, books, plays, short stories and articles from the following countries: USA, Canada, United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, Germany, France, Belgium, Switzerland, Russia, Italy, Greece, Nigeria, Georgia, Mexico, Japan, South Africa and Taiwan.

The overall standard was very high, hence the large number of writers we found to be eligible for the final rounds.

We decided against many competent works for a variety of reasons. Some were not suited for the cinematic medium. Others were conceptually flawed, in that they either delivered last year’s movie or an idea that was just not feasible. There is nothing sadder than a brilliantly executed “bad idea”, (well, unless it’s a badly executed good idea). But in all honesty, the shelves of most Hollywood pros are lined with these. We hope that those who did not make will stay in touch with us. We have enjoyed our myriad of email exchanges and are working hard at making this site more relevant to your careers. Don’t forget that many of our writers got their careers going by using our consulting service-Click here

Résultats De Concours No: 22

Grand prize winner of $3000:

Ferriere , Phil – ATOM SMASHERS

philNicholl Fellowship quarterfinalist Phil Ferriere is an alum of UCLA’s Advanced Professional Program in Screenwriting. He has won several contests and placed in many well-regarded screenwriting competitions. Phil’s latest action script and WriteMovies 1st place winner, ATOM SMASHERS, is inspired by the controversy surrounding Switzerland’s Large Hadron Collider, the world’s largest particle accelerator, which some say could create micro black holes on Earth. In ATOM SMASHERS, Phil Ferriere focuses on a trio of physicists racing to stop a growing chunk of anti-matter from destroying the Earth, but hubris, emotional baggage and deep character flaws quickly become bigger obstacles than the scientific anomaly. Over the next few weeks, Phil will be consulting with Alex Ross in order to take ATOM SMASHERS to the next level. He is also hard at work on a thriller (in the vein of DISTURBIA and WHAT LIES BENEATH) about a 17-year-old girl who suspects a teenage boy living next door is being physically abused. As she increases her dangerous snooping, she discovers her own father might know more than he’s letting on about what is happening at her neighbor’s. Second Place:

Jewers , Margot – CLAIRE JOURNEY

margotMargot was born and raised in Nova Scotia, although she now resides in New York. When Margot was twenty years old she met her biological mother for the first time, having been adopted. She battled schizophrenia and it was in listening to her life that much of the impetus for CLAIRE JOURNEY was formulated.
She has been acting for over 20 years, and has worked with many plays, screenplays and television scripts. From all of these sources Margot developed a love and respect for ‘the story.’
While studying film production at the Newschool, Margot wrote her first screenplay, EYE CONTACT. She honed her craft by studying film editing: learning to arrange the story in the most effective manner to maximize its impact upon the viewer. She looks forward to writing other screenplays in the future — but not before focusing on getting this very personal story made into a feature.

Third Place

Jordan , La’Chris – ROSES IN THE WATER

lachrisLa’Chris is a poet, actress, and award-winning playwright who was named one of the ’50 to Watch’ by the Dramatists Guild of America. She has written numerous plays that have been produced throughout the country in such cities as Seattle, Los Angeles, and New York. Her screenplays include THE SOURCE and LOVE IN THE EYES OF A STRANGER. La’Chris is currently at work on a historical romance novel, THE EMBERS OF BELLEVUE which is scheduled to be released in 2010. La’Chris is a member of the Dramatists Guild of America, the International Centre for Women Playwrights, and the Northwest Playwrights Alliance.
