It’s the day we’ve all been waiting for – today we announce the winners of the WriteMovies Spring 2021 Screenwriting Contest! This is the last major contest we’ll be running this year, so it’s extra exciting for us to see which entries emerge as the winners that we’ll be working to develop and pitch to industry.
Choosing a winner this time has been extremely tough. Thanks to everyone who submitted – there were lots of submissions in contention this time and many that only just missed out!
If you’re looking for feedback on where your work fell short this time, we’ve got a few pointers below. Here are a few hints and tips based on what we learned from your submissions this time around…
- A lot of writers need to focus not only on what they’re writing but how they’re writing it. How you shape a scene, how you intensify the drama, and your style of writing – these can all make a huge difference in whether we’re invested in your script or not.
- It’s crucial that you get your concept right. It’s the foundation of your script, can’t be fixed after you’ve started writing, and is the number one thing that will get a producer interested (or disinterested). Too many writers are trying to work with a premise that won’t fly. Make sure you get it right from the very start – get us excited before we even start reading!
- At the same time, if your script deals with a serious social issue, don’t imagine you can rely solely on that issue to carry the drama. A worthy subject matter might be a good start, but you’ve still got work to do if you want us to invest in the characters and story, rather than just the themes.
- Don’t feel the need to overcomplicate things in an attempt to break the mold. Some submissions were packed with far too many characters or plots too complex to follow; focus instead on clarity and the core elements that have been proven to work. Execute those well and you’ll be much more likely to achieve success.
