We’ve laughed, we’ve sighed, we’ve wept tears of both joy and heartbreak – the submissions for our Romance and Comedy Award 2021 had it all! But now it’s time for us to announce that we’ve found “the one”. It’s time to announce the Romance and Comedy Award 2021 winner!
With Valentine’s Day fast approaching, this is the most romantic time of the year. We’re excited to be making someone’s day (two days early!) by letting them know just how much we love their script!
Well done to everyone who entered for giving us so many great scripts to read. If your script isn’t the winner today, don’t forget that it’s not the end of the road: you’re still in the running for our Winter Contest, with Quarter-Finalists due to be announced in just two weeks on February 26th.
If you’re looking to up your game in these genres for our next contest, here are a few tips about the kind of things that helped decide the winner:
- Romance should be warming, but not too sweet. There’s a fine line to be walked here. It should come with good feelings, but don’t overdo it or it becomes cloying.
- A fresh twist on the romantic-comedy genre. Rom-coms are a well-established genre with tropes that need to be adhered to, but we also need to see something new. Don’t give us the same thing we’ve seen before!
- Dialogue is absolutely vital. Comedy often relies on fast-paced and witty conversations to get the jokes across, while for romance, dialogue is how you build that all important relationship between characters. Get this right, and everything else follows.
- Comedy needs dramatic moments to work. Give us conflict, make us care about the characters, and don’t shy away from the occasional serious moment – it will make the jokes land all the better.
That’s all from us for now. Ladies and gentlemen, we give you… the Romance and Comedy Award winner 2021!
