In London and around the world judges have referred to WINTER as “Capraesque.” Ten countries have bestowed screenwriting awards on the story. Why does it resonate with such a broad audience? Perhaps our cultural and political chaos, and beleaguered migrations remind them of the Great Depression, and Mike, an everyman, reminds them of George Bailey, of It’s a Wonderful Life.
What’s happening in Mike’s world that feels so familiar to our disenfranchised masses?
Music. Mike’s an accordion-playing Santa who sings soulfully with the beautiful Marie. (La La Land).
Humor. Mike’s friends, although social activists, are very silly. (Friends).
Romance. Mike aspires to Hallmark status with the lovely, but engaged Marie.
Family life. Mother with dementia. Divorced. Grown son in Paris. Befriends Jamal, a sad foster child at a Santa gig.
Odd jobs to survive? Emphasis on odd.
Teaching. Award-winning experience, but where does an existential hero teach in the ante-bellum Texas school system?
Santa gigs? A suspect cultural hero. White male. Sit on my lap. Buy. Buy.

THE STORY…
When his mom dies, his friends all move away, and he loses his job, Mike, the errant knight, goes out into the world in search of meaning, or more accurately, an antique box his father left him. On the way to Wyoming Mike’s beloved wreck of a car bursts into flame. A Patrolman and Mike stand by the car embers in a blizzard, and philosophize about Thoreau and desperation.
Mike spends the stormy night on the floor of his empty family home. In the morning a bright red pheasant walks across a snow-laden field restoring Mike’s confidence in the glorious absurdity of life. Mike sells the antique box, expresses his love to Marie, adopts Jamal, then establishes ’Harmony,’ a community pantry distributing food and information for immigrants and the underserved. ICE is discouraged from attending.
